When uploading a document, does Save check in the document? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a SharePoint 2013 Document Library.  "Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited" has Yes selected.

We would like users to upload a document, edit some properties, then check it in.

When uploading a document to a SharePoint 2013 Document Library, the dialog box says, "The document was uploaded successfully and is checked out to you."

If we click Save and the user goes to the document library, it does not show as Checked Out.  Does the "Save" button function the same as Check In?

  • Hi Dude Man,

In SharePoint 2013 that Save button has Check-In functionality, Normally when the user upload a document it will save it in library and it will prompt editform(your first screen) to fill the required column and if click save, it will check In the document (Behind the screen) --- its not a bug, just button label issue

The below picture taken from the SharePoint 2013 -> Here you can see the Save button (But actually it contain Check-In Functionality)

The Below picture taken in SharePoint 2016 -Here they have corrected button label from Save to Check In

  • Hello,

Does it happen for both Save and Check In for the first time the document is uploaded?

When you upload a document first time, it will show checked out since all the required fields needs to be entered.

I assume you are editing a document after upload, make the changes and hit Save which will automatically save the document since the document has all the metadata is updated when it is uploaded.

Hence document will show checked out when you upload first and just gets saved whenever you hit Save whenever you edit it.

    Does this help you?

  • Whether Save or Check In is clicked, the file is not Checked out.  See the second screenshot.

We are intentionally not choosing any fields to be required.

  • Save does not function same as Check-in.

Save will Save the document to that User but any changes will not be viewable to other users until the document has been checked-in.
