Outlook 2013 crash after applying KB4461594 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to let Microsoft know there could be a bug in one of their patches.
It seems way to difficult to find a direction to mention it. So I will post it here.

In our enviroment (Windows 10, 1709 enterprise - Exchange 2010 - Office 2013) we noticed strange outlook 2013 crashes the last month.
It happened when users tried to open certain email messages.
After analyzing it seems that it where all RTF formed messages. Within it manual altered signatures. Tables, hyperlinks, embeded images etc.

I didn't find the exact thing which caused this. I've been altering the RTF code but without succes to point to the error.
That would be great to find a solution.
I've tested several patch levels of Outlook to see if that matters.
Well, it doesn't. So i've tried every Windows update we've gto from December 2018.
When uninstalling KB4461594 (security update for Word 2013 from 8 january 2019)the problem went away.
And the other way when installing KB4461594 the problem is there again.

Here is the application error from outlook:

  • I can confirm that update KB4475525 resolves the issue we were facing.
    wwlib.dll update to version 15.0.5153.1000

The update contains the fix of an issue in which Outlook 2013 crashes when an incoming email message contains a table.

  • After installing the following update the problem was there again...
    KB4462140 --> Update voor Word 2013 (KB4462140), 2 april 2019.
It seems like this update also contains the security update or parts of it.

When we install KB4461594 after KB4461594 it says the update is already installed.

After uninstalling KB4462140 Outlook responded normally again at RTF formed messages.
It's strange to see we're the only ones who are facing this issue.
After the next update of Word we're probably seeing the same issue again. :(

  • Hi Aidan,
I did some extensive research in the matter.
    I've tested Windows 10 - 1709 to Windows 10 - 1809.
With all the different Office 2013 versions (x86/x64) where outlook and word are in present.

I could crash all the versions(outlook). further on I will explain the crashed situation.
the specific issue represents in the file wwlib.dll (KB4462140) wil get the following version of it: 15.0.5217.1000
When I revert back to a version from oktober 2018: 15.0.5085.1000 All works well.

The problematic situation is as follows:
    Manual created signatures.
When someone adds it to a appointment it's forged as RTF.
Composing and sending the appointment goes well.
When the user gets back to the send appointment outlook would crash.
WER files won't get me anywhere.

Where can I report this matter where we can get more in detail? I can reproduce the situation.

  • I can confirm that the newest wwlib.dll - 15.0.1537.1000 from KB4464545 contains the same faulty code.

  • KB4464590 Doesn't fix the issue. Crashes still occur when openening mail or appointments with RTF and manually forged signatures. wwlib.dll version 15.0.5145.1000
