Restore Missing “New” or “New Folder” Option in Desktop and Explorer Context Menu in Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am not getting the New option on right click and also the New Folder button is not working. I have tried to fix the issue by following the below link.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9ee6ecdf-5958-4af4-b640-c659ada57bc4/option-to-create-new-folder-on-desktop-is-missing?ranMID=24542&ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-Qt8vol_19vXBVbJdNq6jhw&tduid=(789d6aa44e26bd220f0073596614c0c2)(256380)(2459594)(TnL5HPStwNw-Qt8vol_19vXBVbJdNq6jhw)()

However I dont have the similar structure as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\

It is having the below structure-

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\DefaultIcon

Even New was not present under ContextMenuHandlers. I had created it manually with the suggested default value, which does not solve the issue. Please suggest how do I fix the issue.

  • Try to capture system traces using procmon, might help you to locate exact key in reg.

  • Hi,

According to your description, you lost the Background registry subkey.

    The registry subkey (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\)

    is under Background.

Please try to find a PC that the version of Windows is same as yours, then export the Background registry subkey, and then import the .reg file into your registry to see if it can work.

Here are some screenshots for your reference.
