MDT 2013 - Options to Sideload Applications RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

According to Sideload Apps with the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn613830.aspx

There are two methods are available for deploying the app you created in MDT Deployment Workbench.

Method 1: The first lets users select the app on the Applications page in the Deployment Wizard during Windows 8 operating system deployment This method is useful when the app is optional and you want the user deploying Windows 8 to be able to decide whether the targeted device requires the app.

Method 2: The second method requires that you add a task sequence step to the LTI task sequence to deploy the app. You can modify the exiting Install Applications task sequence step or add a new Install Application task sequence step to deploy the app. The benefit of this method is that the app is automatically deployed without intervention from the user performing the deployment. This method is useful when the app is mandatory and you always want it deployed with Windows 8.

    Question:

    • Is it possible to enable the application selectability (finctionality of the Method 1) in the method 2?
This question is determined by the necessity to maintain the application management comfort of the MDT Task Sequence Properties window while allowing the admins to select the applications.

Thank you very much, in advance!

  • Thank you for the reply, Ty, but if I add the application to the Task Sequence it disappears from the list of the applications which can be selected when the Task Sequence is executed. Isn't that the functionality of the MDT?

If you want it to be possible to deselect applications then use method 1 and do not use MandatoryApplications (which enforces the installation of the application). If you use method 2, where you add the apps directly to the task sequence you are essentially making them all mandatory and they can not be deselected as they are a part of the task sequence.

  • I don't fully understand what you have asked.

If you want an application selected by default but, have the ability to deselect that application you would use method 1 with the Application property.

If you want an application selected by default but, have it Mandatory then you would use MandatoryApplication property from method 1.
