EMail encryption for On-premises Exchange RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have On-premises Exchange 2013 and Azure RMS license. Deployed Azure RMS connector and configured. However when we sent emails to external users, they are getting encrypted message with extension .rpmsg and below message.

"This message uses Microsoft Information Protection solutions. Open this item using an email application that supports protected messages, such as Microsoft Outlook"

They are not using Outlook, just public email address like live.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com.

How can they open encryption message without using Outlook?

I tested with Rights Management Add-on for IE, but not able to open.

Even if this add-on works, how can we can expect everyone install Add-on for IE?

Is there any other way external users can open encrypted message?

If not, is there any other best solution for Email Encryption for on-premises mailboxes?

Thanks in advance for your help

  • For external users your best option right now is to configure exchange message classifications.

You could call one External Protected Email and it would show up alongside your templates.

This I guess would only work with exchange online, but you would configure your transport rules to encrypt messages with that classification use Office Message Encryption

For on-prem, the best way to have your users choose the send protected option within the RMS Sharing Application. This however will not protect the email itself. Only the attachments.

You will be limited on what accounts you can send to with the sharing application (no free email account Ids)
