  • Hi Johan

FCS will formally support WSUS 3.0 at our RTM.  But in the meantime, you can begin using WSUS 3.0 in your lab environment with FCS.  There are two different ways to get it up and running.

    Option 1

    • Install WSUS 2.0/SP1
    • Install the WSUS Assistant for FCS
    • Upgrade to WSUS 3.0

    Option 2

    • Install WSUS 3.0 only
    • Configure WSUS to sync with MU every hour
    • Configure WSUS to download the Forefront Client security product and the 'Definition Updates' category
    • Configure WSUS to auto-approve the Definition Updates for your clients

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Chris!

I have tried with WSUS 3.0 cause i really wanted that to work...i gave up, and installed wsus 2.0 in my lab (on my wsus server) and made sure the FCS server showed up in the WSUS server.

My FCS setup still says "WSUS 2.0 not installed"

how does FCS detect WSUS installation?

I don't want to install WSUS on the same machine.

    Thanx for your help

  • Hello!

If you want to install the "Distribution Role" (the FCS server component the lives on the WSUS server), you need to run ServerSetup.exe from that machine (you cannot remotely install a component as part of FCS setup).

So in your case, I assume you want the Management, Collection and Reporting roles (with their DB's) on one box (let's call it Server 1) and the FCS Distribution role on your existing WSUS 2.0/SP1 server (let's call it Server 2)

If that is the case, you need to run ServerSetup.exe on both boxes.

    • On Server 1 - select all roles except the Distribution role
    • On Server 2 - select only the Distribution role

    Hope this helps
