concerning MS NLB on teamed NICs RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi

I have 2 HP DL 380G8 serfers with quad NICs.

i intend to use file access and expect heavy traffic so i teamed 2 NICS in each server (all defaults kept)

and they seem fine, i also tested file access and it worked fine.

when i added a 2nd array member and then defined NLB and the application on this VIP - file access breaks and i get "page not found

    1) Ïs it as all possible, FOR UAG 2010 External, to NLB two servers where each is a teamed "NIC" ?

    is there some "trick"to it?

    much obliged,

  • Hi Amig@. Using NIC teaming with NLB had traditionally been tricky. The problem is that the teaming driver will assign a MAC addrees to the team, but NLB will also add his own MAC so there can be a conflict between them. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278431

As far as I can remember there are some vendors that offer teaming drivers compatible with NLB so you'd better check the drivers version and so on in the HP site

    Hope it helps

  • Hi Amig@. As I told you, you should confirm with HP support it the drivers will work with NLB. An alternative some times used is to manually set the MAC address in the teaming tool to the same one used by NLB

  • It's better than nothing. Take into account that when using multicast mode a unicast IP address is resolved to a multicast MAC address and not all products accept that. Maybe this survival guide can be helpful http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7329.network-load-balancing-nlb-survival-guide.aspx
