Windows 10 update behaviour. Can you force "Update and shut down" instead of Shut down? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I have problems getting the 1709 update to my machines. The update has been approved for a test group and since last week (after changing and fixing some things on our WSUS (Server 2012)) those machines get the update. The update is installed partially and to finalize it, you need to restart as we all know. Those machines however have multiple options when you press the start button, users can choose "Shut down", "Update and shut down", "Restart" and "Update and restart"... Users always choose "Shut down" in our company, probably because they are used to do so, and this results in the update not being fully installed... When I check the eventlog, I see EventID 42 and 107 when a user chooses shut down which tells me Windows does some sort of sleep mode instead of shutting it really down when choosing to shut down without updating...

What is your experience with this? Is there a way to make users force to choose "Update and shut down"?

Our PC's are configured using GPO and machines are automatically updated at 21:00 CET. So when a users quits working at the end of the day and they choose "Shut down", the update period is missed.... We used to install everything at 11:00 CET, but because some updates take long and slows down the system, we decided to delay it till the evening and WIndows 7 PC's have no issues at all, it's only a pain with Windows 10... I think Windows 7 by default finalizes the update when you choose Shut down...

  • Hello,

I suggest you set deadline for update installation, this way you should not miss any update installation.

  • Hello,

How about preventing user to see shutdown button on start menu? So that you users can only lock down the computer and then let all your computers to install update and shutdown at 11:00 CET.

  • Hi Yan Li,

No, that's not really an option... We have many users who forget to close programs and if those programs are forcefully closed when the machine is shut down at 11:00, we have a problem...

Do you know if there is a way to make "update and shutdown" or "update and restart" the only options and make "shutdown" or "restart" disappear when there are updates to be installed?

    Kind regards, Erik
