Exchange sizing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'd like to have some clues about DPM sizing for Exchange.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758141.aspx

    For Exchange data:

    • Data source size x (1 + log change) / (alert threshold - .05)

is it 90%-5? 85% of the db size?

    • 4.0 x retention range in days x log change x data source size + 1600 MB

    i don't understand these calculations.

is there anybody who can give me some clues about?

    thank you

  • Hi

How big is your Exchange Environment? I use the DPM calculator and it gives you quite alot of information:

  • thank you DareDevil, i know about the sizing tool.

and it's because of that i'm wondering about the correct size.

    i'll explain everything here.

i made the calculcation for a db 155gb in size, 180 days retention.

    here is the maths:

    REPLICA:155,13*1,06/0,85=193,4562

    RP: 4*180*0,06*155,13+1,6=6.703,216

    Total storage= 193,4562 +6.703,216 = 6.896,6722

about 7TB to protect 155gb for 180 days looks like a lot of space...

i made the same maths using the DPM admin tool to create a protection groups with the same results.

then i used the XLS sizing tool, and the output is quite different

i used same values for size and retention and an average transaction logs per db of 8000 tlogs per day (a big number indeed)

    here is the output:

Total Replica Volume Size ,18 TB
Total Recovery Point Volume Size 3,92 TB
    Total Storage Required 4,11 TB

3 tb difference means a lot of space... so i'm wondering what to do.

    any hint?

    thank you
