  • From your question you are running WSS 2.0. If I were you I would while you are moving onto to a new server take the opportunity to upgrade it to WSS 3.0 which offers only advantages compared to WSS 2.0.

The standard MS upgrade documentation for WSS 2.0 to 3.0 includes as the third option how to move a WSS 2.0 installation via the database files to a WSS 3.0 installation on a new server.

Find a link to a starter page for WSS upgrade info on this page: http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/Articles for 2007 Products/Installation.aspx (near the end)

On the other part of your question. The parallel product to WSS 2.0, SPS 2003, includes build-in Backup and Restore. No doubt the book you have been reading was talking about SPS 2003.
