trouble changing choice column from dropdown to checkboxes

I have a custom list with a column of type choice. I had originally set it up as a choice column where I provided the choice options for the drop down list. Now I have a need to change it to checkboxes to allow users to select more than one option. I've done this before on other lists, but on this one I am throwing an error: Non-supported field type change. The field cannot be changed to the new type.

I can't figure out what is not allowing this. Thanks for any ideas.

Do you mean does the list already have data for that field? Yes, about 4300 records, so I don't really see how I can delete it and re-enter if that is what you are thinking.

that's what i am thinking due to data its giving you error. create another column and copy the data.
