Incorrectly removed a 2003 front end server and need to remove back end 2003 server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a mixed email domain.  Exchange 2003 and 2010.  I have already removed all user mailboxes from Exchange 2003.  I uninstalled the front end server yesterday and pointed my firewall SMTP address at Exchange 2010 server.  That worked fine.  I still see the exchange 2003 front end server in the 2003 Exchange manager.  I did not think there was anything special needed to remove this server.  How to I force it out of my Active Directory?  I am on Exchange 2008 R2.

Next I need to remove the Exchange 2003 back end server.  I need my public folders to work on Exchange 2010.  They are already replicating.  I also need it to be removed from AD correctly.

    Thank You, Scott

  • Since this 2003, if Exchange was removed from the server you should be able to right click it in ESM and select "Delete"

also, before removing the 2003 servers, see:

  • I cannot right click the server.  I locks up the EMS console.  The front end server is unreachable.  I will need to manually remove it from AD.

  • Ok, then follow this. Removing 2003 manually is supported:

  • ok

I have already run the uninstall from add or remove programs yesterday.  That worked fine.  There are no mailboxes on this server.  There is nothing to do except to remove it drom AD.  The server has been wiped clean...  The back end server is up and running.  Maybe if I remove the connectors to the Exchange 2010 server and remove the back end server all will be well?

    Thank You, Scott

Ok, but ensure its removed from AD. That KB has the steps listed to remove it.

  • Right clicking the server in ESM hangs the ESM.

  • Deleted with ADSI!  Now I will follow the artical to remove the last 2003 server.

Should I remove all connectors first from the back end 2003 server to the Exchange 2010 server?

You mean the RGC? yes. Be sure to follow that KB to the letter though .

you will want to make sure the PF server is correctly replicated and all folders ( including system folders) are properly moved.

  • RGC???

I will follow it to the letter.  I have an image of the server as well.  I can always restore the public folders store if that would help id it blows up...

    Thank You, Scott

  • Routing Group Connector. I assumed that is what you meant  :)

Well, you dont want to restore the 2003 server once the replicas have been removed. If you have them on the 2010 side alrady, then you should be good to go.

But that article is the way to go. Good luck!

  • Got it!

I have done this before but not since Exchange 2000.  Thanks for all the great advice.

  • So far I am unable to get all the back end public folders to move to my Exchange 2010 server.  Last night I moved all replica's and stoped the store service on the public folders in 2003.  I was only able to access 5 out of my 6 folders.  They are all replicating sucessfully but no go...  I had to put replication back on that folder so I could access that one folder again.  I may just call Microsoft today.  I need this server gone by months end...  All that is stoping me is the public folders now.

    Thank You, Scott

  • Hi Scott,

If there is just one folder could not be access successfully, it maybe cuased by that the folder have not been replicated properly.
We could check the replication log, and confirm the issue.
Or, I would create a new folder, and move the content to the new foler, and then do replication.
Hope the issue have been solved by the call support.
    Regards!

  • If you dont' have that many public folders, just export it to pst and dump it into the 2010 pf store using outlook.
