Windows 2016 Deduplication - Windows XP problems to open files. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have problems after having deduplicated data in Windows 2016. Problems with .pdf, .ptt, some .doc...
We have tried many solutions for Windows 2012 but it differs from 2016.

Currently we can open some deduplication excel and word files, also can open PDF with foxit reader but the images are corrupted.

Anyone know what might be happening?

    Thank you,

    Enrique F R

  • Hi Enrique,

Could you please specify your issue with more details?

You mean couldn't open the  deduplication data in server 2016 when you from the windows xp client?

    Please correct me if misunderstanding.

And what's the error message do you get when you try to access? If possible, you could also post the screenshot

If there's 3rd party software for example AV software, please  temporarily disable to do a check.

    Best Regards,

    Mary

  • Hi Mary,

Correct, the problems are only with Windows XP.
The firewall and 3rd party software are disabled.

    PDF problems:

    With Adobe Reader XI:

    With Foxit Reader:

    Others:
Word open well the files but some files open with Libre Office appear empty.

This is the most similar problem but our registry (2016) are diferent (2012)

  • Hi NevaEnrigue,

Please check if any third party software registry lead to the problem.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2817216/windows-server-2012---the-request-is-not-supported.-for-smb-read-andx-requests-for-files-managed-by-data-deduplication

And also without volume setting data deduplication to do a check.

    Best Regards,

    Mary

  • Hi,

If it was the third party software the problem should be in other S.O.

I have tested with a new MV that basically has installed the software to open these files.
And Windows 2016 is a new WS created to perform the deduplication of a File Server.

I had already checked the link that indicated, but on Windows XP says:

SMB v1 Clients: Windows XP SP3, 3rd party CIFS clients (MACintosh, Unix Samba)
Windows XP clients are unable to open files on Server 2012 shares.
Only deduped files (with the size >32KB) are not accessible on the volume, expanded files are accessible.

The strange thing is that we can open some files (with the size > 32KB) and others do not, or open incompletely.

    Thank you,

    Enrique F R

  • Hi NevaEnrique,

    >The strange thing is that we can open some files (with the size > 32KB) and others do not, or open incompletely.

Or could that also be the compatibility problem for different types of file?  For example, since office files (documents, excel, PowerPoint file) and PDF files are from different vendor, could be the compatibility problem for server 2016 version for the file vendor? Maybe also confirm PDF vendor?

    Best Regards,

    Mary

  • Hi Mary,

If the files are not deduplicated Windows XP can open all files without problems. But we want to save space and therefore deduplicate the file server. This is where problems with Windows XP appear.

It doesn't make sense that it is a compatibility problem, or I didn't understand you correctly...

    Thank you,

    Enrique F R

  • Hi Enrique,

    Thanks for your feedback.

According to current scenario, some files could open and others not. So I doubt if it is related to the different types of the files.

And since it still couldn't find any clue, I'm afraid you might need to contact  Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) so that a dedicated Support Professional can help you on this issue.

XP is EOL either way, if you absolutely need to have support for legacy OS you'd better disable deduplication and downgrade SMB version to 2.
