RSAT tools Vista SP2

Question

Does the RSAT tools for SP1 work on the SP2 integrated install? According to Microsoft you need to install them on SP1 Vista then update to SP2 but what do you do if you did a clean install with SP2? Format and reinstall?Friday, December 5, 2008 10:52 PM

RSAT package available on download site can’t be installed on top of SP2. The package will be re-released by SP2 RTM and it will install on top of SP2 and work with SP2. Release notes for beta contains this information.
Copying excerpt from the relnote:
Installation of the following updates fails if you have already installed SP2:
· Group Policy Preferences Client-Side Extensions
· Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
· JIS90 Fonts for Japanese Localization
To avoid this issue, install the update prior to installing SP2. If you have encountered this issue, and the update is required, uninstall SP2, install the update, and then reinstall the service pack.

HiI just tested this and your correct?I tried on an SP2 integrated and on another system with the standalone SP2 installed. The RSAT tools would not install on either one?I looked around and couldn't find any information about this, hopefully, it's just a beta 1 issue.

Man what a bugger this is , I install a fresh SP2 isntall of Vista and RSAT will not work, RTM of the product is months away this is something Microsoft should be working hard to fix. This was one of the reasons we did not deploy Vista when it RTM, the adminpak.msi would not work Vista and we had to wait W2K8 Server RTM to get the RSAT Tools.
There has to be a way. Come on Microsoft I know you can do better then this,

Hi Bill
I do understand your frustration.
However, there is nobody posting here that can comment on the design of the current beta or why certain development/programming decisions were made. We can only tell you how they are designed to work in their current, released form and try to help troubleshoot problems.
Unlike the previous issue with SP1 and the RSAT tools, there is a workaround with SP2.
After learning about this issue, I was able to uninstall the SP2 standalone, install the RSAT tools and then reinstall SP2.
Hope this helps.

I found a link to a site that referrs to a method that allows the update to be installed.
http://blog.tiensivu.com/aaron/archives/1505-Generic-way-of-brute-force-installing-a-.MSU-package-in-Vista-or-Server-2008.html
It basically bypasses the MS logic in the MSU package and installs the CAB file directly.
In the example he uses %temp%\kb667668\ for the destination directory to extract the MSU file. That directory needs to be created before the extraction for the command to work. I created a folder on my C drive to use and then went from there.
I verified it is installed and enabled it in the Programs and Features area in Vista and it seems to be working.
I do not however take any responsibility for any problems that may occur as this is not a MS supported solution.Friday, January 16, 2009 2:54 PM -
Is there an estimation on the new RSAT release date?

I just downloaded RSAT for Vista x64 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D647A60B-63FD-4AC5-9243-BD3C497D2BC5&displaylang=en, and installed it on my Vista x64 SP2 machine.
It installed with no problems. I opened Programs and Features, selected Turn Windows features on or off, and checked Remote Server Administration Tools, clicked OK, and waited for it to complete.
After that, I tried Administrative Tools\Active Directory Sites and Services. It worked without problem, even had the View\Advanced Features already checked. I could open the attribute editor etc.
So, it seems they fixed it.Tuesday, September 8, 2009 4:36 AM -
The Remote Server Administration Tools seem to be a part of SP2 (at least the 32-bit version and if you do a clean install) and it seems you do not need to download them.
After banging my head about it for a while, decided to do another search, came across this forum posting, decided to have a peek, and lo and behold...
If you go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Turn Windows features on or off - if you scroll down, you will find an entry for RSAT without ever having to install them initially.
I have since tried this on a clean install of Vista SP2 - admittedly with all updates installed (blame WSUS for that), so it might get installed as part of that although I looked at all of the updates which installed and I couldn't find any which might install them - RSAT is still in the list on my install although your mileage may vary.Friday, December 4, 2009 9:36 AM
