VM Backup via DPM 2012 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Environment:

We are running DPM version 2012 SP1.

VMs are running within Private Cloud and accessing single CSV volume.

DPM on Hyper-V responsible to take VMs backup.

It will initiate backup of VM and all VHDs attached to the VM.

Is there anyway to select only VM backup (i.e. OS level only) and not the VHDs attached to it. Since the VHDs (which are mostly DBs) are already being backed up through other means.

    Thanking in advance.

  • Hi

You need to use PowerShell to tell DPM to exclude certain VHD files:

Use the -HyperVPagefileExclusions to exclude files however I wouldn't necessarily advise it...

    Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName "<DPM SERVER NAME>" -HyperVPagefileExclusions "*_pagefile.vhd"

All your database VHD files must have the same naming convention so for example <VM>_Database_*.vhd for example.

I would thoroughly test this on a non-production system first, including restoring the VM, recreating the VHDs for the database, attaching the files to the VM, starting the VM, formatting the disks, etc...

Be aware that this a global property so ALL VHDs with that naming convention would be excluded.
