How to add a user of Active Directory as a contact in Exchange RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    i'm not sure that this is the right section for this issue, so my apologies if i'm wrong.

    lets say we have a user, john doe, listed in AD. this user doesnt have an Exchange mailbox.

    In the domain controler, we open the proprieties for this user, and we add manually an email address (john.doe@externaldomain.com).

    What i want to do is, for a user in Exchange, and when composing a new mail, to be able to see john doe listed in the contact list, and to address to him a mail that will go to john.doe@externaldomain.com.

    i hope that my question is clear. any hints? thanks

  • No that will not work.
    What you can do is enable him as a MailUser with his external smtpaddress.

    Example:
    Enable-MailUser "John Doe" -alias john.doe -ExternalEmailAddress john.doe@externaldomain.com

  • Add him as a MailUser - this will show him in the GAL

    "Enable-MailUser" http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996549%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx

  • Thanks Martina and Oliver

    you are both right, the solution is to add the user as a MailUser. i also find a script to do this for all users in a OU:

    $enableusers =  Get-User -OrganizationalUnit TargetOU -RecipientTypeDetails user
    $enableusers | foreach { Enable-MailUser $_ -externalEmailAddress $_.WindowsEmailAddress.toString() }
