  • Question

  • Hi, I've been advised to come here from microsoft vista community forum, I've copied over all the posts from there as it won't let me post a link here at the moment.

    Original Question

    "Hi,

    brief history:-
My pc was having some problems including random restarts, somethings including bad sectors and a T.E.C of April 2013 and one instance of total failure to even see there was a HDD present led me to believe I had imminent hard drive failure, I bought a new harddrive and used the pc's restore disks to install everything fresh including the OS Vista Home Premium.

    Main Issue:-
Anyway during the install at the very end whilst doing performance check the PC restarted unexpectedly, after restarting it seemed to skip this step of the installation and started fine. The PC worked much much better but when I tried the WEI rating it restarted at CPU assessment, when I look in winsat the test ends at

    winsat\main.cpp:1161: > Running Assessment: cpu '-encryption2'

    nothing appears after this point.
I followed some posts on here and did a sfc scan I think its called- nothing was wrong except for that thing it tells you to ignore umm I forget damn it don't ask me to do it again I went through all the steps and it said it was a common error that was wrong something to do with an ini misreading.

Anyway during all this I tried restoring AGAIN and the exact same happened the restart during the install in exact same spot, have now updated everything and anything I can find and still the same happens during the WEI, it also very randomnly and very occasionally restarts during some youtube videos but with other youtube videos it is fine.
I have done stress testing with some online thing that tests your CPUs through silverlight it had all 4 cores running at 99% and didn't fail or restart.
I also ran 3dMark benchmark tests and it was fine.
I want to pull out my hair!
    Please help :)

ps, I have looked at perhaps updating BIOS as a possible fix (scares me) but my motherboard is listed as 'DIXONS G31MX Series' and I can find no support whatsoever for this motherboard, I am awaiting 'knowhow' [formerly 'thetechguys' formerly 'pcservicecall' (Philips the pc manufacturer refers me to pcservicecall) (sighs)] to get back to me on why they are so useless!

pps. I read somewhere someone with a similar issue fixed it by turning off some 'green' setting in their BIOS it was GPU for CPU but I do not have the same setting to try it.  I have tried changing a couple of things in the BIOS to no avail such as EIST (forget what it stands for). As the pc is running so damn well now except for these specfic problems I can't help feel there is some kind of simple explanation rather than its a hardware problem as surely some of my games would cause restarts as well instead of jsut the WEI and a few youtube videos. Before I go buy more new hardware I really want to check it isn't a vista specific problem or something fixable within the BIOS etc thoroughly.

    pps some system details

    Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.

    Method 1:

    Step 1:  Click on start.
    Step 2:  Click on Computer.
Step 3:  Go to the location: C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore

Step 4:  Delete all *.xml files

    Method 2:

    a.     Click the Start button.
    b.     In the Search box, type command prompt.
    c.     In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    Type the following command:

    winsat formal and hit ENTER

Check if the issue still persists.

Hope this information helps. Please feel free to reply if you have any further queries, we would be glad to assist.

Hi, thanks very much for the reply, I should of said I'd tried both these steps before but it didn't hurt to retry again.

Method 1: There are no xml files or any files in the datastore, never has been any there since I restored pc I'm not sure about before this. (I unhid hidden files and dbl checked) There are 2 old runs showing from 2006 & 2008 in the winsat log if that makes any difference. I'll post whole log below in code box. (I'm surprised the old outputs 06/08 remain even after restore- they were pre buying the pc so must be from during build I presume)

Method 2: the admin cmd instruction winsat formal ran at first then restarted pc, the last line I saw before that was the first - encryption line, will see if that is where it ended in log below.

sorry the codebox didn't work :(
Also wanted to note I've checked in dxdiag it is on directx 11 and says there are no problems, although my graphics card only supports up to directx 10,  it is a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, driver is up to date as of Oct 2nd 2012.

thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

  • First lets test what hardware we can.

    Standard Hardware Troubleshooting

    S.M.A.R.T

Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator.

Disk drives in Windows monitor themselves for impending failure. The feature is called S.M.A.R.T. It will detect impending failure 30% of the time. In an elevated command prompt type
    wmic /namespace:\\root\wmi PATH MSStorageDriver_FailurePredictStatus get active,predictfailure,reason /format:List
If it's on Active will be true, if not on turn it on in the computer's BIOS.

Predict Failure should be False if everything's ok.

In Vista and later if SMART predicts failure Windows prompts the user to run Backup.

    Run Chkdsk
In Computer right click your drives and choose Properties, then Tools tab,
then click Check Now. Tick BOTH checkboxes then Start. Reboot. This will
    take overnight.

    Sfc
Check for file  corruption by clicking Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click
Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type

    sfc /scannow

    Memory Diagnostic
If you haven't run a memory diagnostic then please do so. Click Start - Control Panel - choose Classic View in left hand pane - choose Administrative Tools -  then Memory Diagnostics Tool.
