hyper-v using saved state RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just found out that one of my servers is backed up by DPM using saved state.

I finally found out the reason! The OS disk is dynamic.

Is there any way to fix it and change it to basic without destroying the OS partition?

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

In Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/Server 2008 and Windows 7/8, it is easy to the conversion of basic disk to dynamic disk, but convert/change a dynamic disk to basic disk very troublesome, because in many cases "Revert to Basic Disk" option is greyed out in disk management, and cannot revert back to a basic drive. When using DiskPart.exe tool in command line, it requires to clean all of volumes on the dynamic disk for the conversion. This will loss the data on the volume. We should back up data and copy them back after converting.

While if you would like to convert dynamic disk to basic disk without data losing, you may try some third party software.

Generally, there are three ways to convert a dynamic disk to basic disk:

    1. Convert a dynamic disk to basic disk via deleting all volumes on the dynamic disk.
    2. Convert a dynamic disk to basic disk via using Partition Recovery Software.
    3. Convert a dynamic disk to basic disk with NO DATA LOSS by using AOMEI Dynamic Disk Converter.

You may use the “Dynamic Disk Converter” to complete the work:

    Hope this helps!
