Archiving feature in Exchange 2010

Question

Hi
we are planning to give archive mailbox 7gb for 500 users. I know how to enable archive and retention policies. But I want to know because of archiving mailbox server performance will affect. What are the performance issues will come. Is there any tool is there to measure best practices for archiving..
Note:- Planning to give separate Mail DB and storage for archiving.

Check out the Calculator and factor in your archives and second tier mailboxes.

I share your concerns about this as well. When I looked at this I wanted to make sure I wouldnt strain the resources of the server with additional stores mounted and clients connected. Personally - I think 8GB is rather low for any mailbox implementation today - especially when you throw in the other connections ( ActiveSync etc...)
I like a min. of 16GB on any mbx server. Just one man's opinion :)

One of your main concerns would be capacity, i.e do you have enough and what type you will be using and if you decvide to seperate from your primary storage.

Hi
Thanks for your response.
We are going to give separate storage for archiving, double the size capacity is there.
My concern about server performance, currently having 8 GB ram with intel xenon dual processor.

There wouldn't much overhead on the actual RAM or CPU except if you are indexing, even then the overhead is small.

What I am saying is there is little overhead to CPU & RAM when introducing PA.
