BDC metadata store not available. Not able to install WCF hot fix. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows 7 enterprise 64 bit machine with SP 2010 beta2 and SPD 2010 beta2. When I select External Content Types in SPD I get the message "BDC metadata store is currently unavailable."

Got the answer by searching on this forum that I need to install WCF hot fix KB976462 for this.

But when I tried installing the Hot fix got the message. "This update is not applicable for your computer." Also I am part of Built in Administrators group.

    Thanks

  • Can you check whether are you able to create a new BDC service application?

And also would be worth to check whether BDC service is enabled in the farm, by going to Central Admin | System settings | Manage services in the farm

  • Can you confirm that Business Data Catalog Service is running for your web application? You can check that in Central Administration | Application Management | Service Applications | Manage service applications | Business Data Connectivity and Central Administration | Application Management | Service Applications | Configure service application associations

In regards to Update, can you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features | View installed updates and check whether it is already installed?

It would also be helpful to check if any errors are logged in the Event Viewer.

  • In the  Configure service application associations BDC was not assocaited with the application. So I Added the same to my web application.

In the  Manage service applications There are two entries for BDC. One is shown as started while the below one is shown as stopped. I tired clicking on the below one to start it but got the error page of SP 2010 with messge "The load balancer is not provisioned. Verify the load balancer was provisioned successfully before retrieving endpoint addresses. "

In the event viewer I am getting the following error

    - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

      </Event>

In the view Installed Updates in Control panel i was not able to identify whether it has been installed or not as there were some hot fixes were installed. But also noticed that the required hotfix KB97646 has already been installed. This explains why i was not able to install the hot fix but not why cannot I configure or access BDC.

    thanks

  • >>There are two entries for BDC. One is shown as started

So if you associate the one which is started to your web application, does it work? By default, SP2010 will create only one BDC service application. Did you create the other one?

  • My mistake in not explaining fully.

Under the Type column one is a service application while other is a proxy. It is the proxy that is stopped. I cannot start the proxy. The Manage service applications section shows BDC service application as started and proxy as stopped.

Even after associating the BDC and all other to my web application I am not able to start the proxy.

While similar scenario is there for the "Search Service Application" the proxy is stopped. And when I click on the service application it open a new page and shows the status and other details.

No I did not not created any other BDC service application.

    Thanks

  • Thanks a lot this has solved the problem.

I am able to create a new BDC service application. I then associated the new service application to my web application and remove the default one.
After this I closed the site in SPD and opened the same again. Now when I try to browse external content type the error is not coming.

Now I will try to create new external content type and see it can be create.

It seems there was some problem with the BDC service application that was created by default.

    Once again thanks a lot.

  • I have got the same problem with win server 2008 SP2 (not R2!) but trying to install the WCF hot fix KB976462 shows the message "The update does not apply to your system". In the updates list I haven't found that update. Maybe it's only for R2?
Also I have installed SPS2010 RC

Any ideas (apart from installing R2 ;-))?

  • There is a separate update version available for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, are you sure you downloaded the update for Windows Server 2008?

  • At the page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee554869(office.14).aspx I have found the following:
You must install the WCF Hotfix for Microsoft Windows (KB971831). The hotfix is available at this link for Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Vista Service Pack 2, and at this link for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

The downloaded KB-Number does not match the number in the text but maybe the hotfix is newer. Sadly that does not help me much.
    I have:
-Stopped the BDC Service on "Services on Server"
-Removed the BDC Service under "Manage Service Applications"
-Created a new one (with a new application pool [where is that one created actually? I cannot find it in IIS)
    -Started the BDC Service

One thing I have found, under the IIS -> SharePoint - 80 ->_vti_bin Folder right-click and browse the BdcAdminService.svc brings up a http 400 Bad Request
    Application eventlog reports no errors

  • the WCF service "ListData.svc" has had a problem as well. With help of the blog post http://vspug.com/marwantarek/tag/ado-net-data-services/ I was able to resolve the issue. But opening the "BdcAdminService.svc" or working with external content types still don't work. The Designer still says "The Business Data Connectivity Metadata Store is currently unavailable".
Are there some other low level checks I can do, like testing the wcf services?

    Thanks

  • I am having the same issue on an R2 server.  I have created two single server farms.  I cannot get passed this connection issue from Designer.  I created a BCS service application (no problem), the service is started.  I even deleted it and recreted it.  No dice.

kb976462 is installed according to windows updates.  This is a roadblock right now.

  • if you are using SPS2010RC you cannot use SPD2010Beta. It must be a new version (same build as SPS).

the hotfix cannot be applied because it is already included in RC.
