Exchange 2010 Restore problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just installed DPM 2010 and I ran a succesfull backup of my exchange 2010 databases. We wanted to test a restore so I created a dummy account and deleted an e-mail from it. Created a recovery database on my exchange server and mounted it. Then I attempted to restore the dummy mailbox to the restore database. When I do this it looks like it is restoring the entire database not just the one dummy mailbox I selected.

Is this normal? I dont want to restore the entire database to the recovery database. I just want to restore the 1 mailbox I need.

  • Hi,

This seems to be the common perception, however DPM only supports restore methods supported by the Microsoft Exchange team.  Individual e-mail or mailbox restores are only supported using Microsoft Exchange tools.  Although 3rd party products offer this granular capaibility, it is not sanctioned, recommended or supported by Microsoft.    The same can be said for AD restores, you must restore AD using systemstate restore, then recovery AD objects using Microsoft tools.

  • Hey,

You can find the information necessary in the following whitepaper: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=be885d26-25e5-41ff-afc8-506414aed960

The whitepaper explains the different options you have.

On page 27 you will find exactly what you need to do to recover a single mailbox.

    Hope it helps

    Cheers,

  • Thanks for the reply.

This is what I did but even though I selected a single mailbox to restore it still restored the entire database and then I extracted the mailbox items I wanted out of the recovery database and into the live mailbox. Looking around I cant see another option so i guess this is how its supposed to work. I just have a pretty large database so to recover a single item it takes a long time to restore the entire database to the recovery database and I was hoping there was a way of just restoring the one mailbox to the recovery database.
