2016 Hyper-V Server Network Down Until Disable & Re-Enable Virtual network Adapter MGT RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a new, vanilla 2016 server running hyper-v.  It is patched current to: July 9, 2019—KB4507460 (OS Build 14393.3085)

    On boot up post adding the virtual switch to the Hyper-V server the network comes up with the yellow triangle. If we connect via the iDRAC and disable the Virtual Network Adapter - MGT and then re-enable the network starts working again, until the next reboot.

    Any ideas?

    on the host or the guest? an ipconfig /all may be helpful.

    disable the Virtual Network Adapter - MGT

    what is a Virtual Network Adapter - MGT?

    I'd also check here and with Dell that the server support Server 2016

    Yes, on the idrac screen at the windows login it shows network status on Yellow Icon, which means down or no connection.

    On the Hyper-V HOST

    what is a Virtual Network Adapter - MGT?
    This is the virtual adapter on the Hyper-V switch for the management port.

    I'd also check here and with Dell that the server support Server 2016
    Its a Dell R740XD, brand new server.  Its on the HCL.

  • When you add the Hyper-V role the host OS is moved to a special VM in the parent partition and a new external vSwitch is created and the internet protocols are removed from the adapter and the Hyper-V Extensible Switch protocol is added turning that physical port into a multi-port virtual switch, a new vEthernet network adapter is also created for the host to use that is connected to this external vSwitch.

    A couple of things to check;
