Migrate vom SCDPM 2007 to SCDPM 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have to Migrate from DPM 2007 to DPM 2012. Now I see two possible scenarios here and it would love to hear feedback if my ideas are correct or if I am going to run into troubles with the way I would like to go. In addition which one would you prefere? The only condition I have is to reuse as much of the existing backup as possible. Most servers are in remote locations so creating an automatic initial replica via network is not possible as it would take serveral weeks.

    (my preference) Idea One:

    a) Install SCDPM 2012 on new maschine

    b) de-install DPM 2007 agents and install new dpm 2012 agents and add storagepool to dpm 2012

    c) configure DPM 2012 (protection groups) just as on DPM 2007

    d) manually mount the replica volume of DPM 2007 and copy those replicas to the new dpm 2012 replica path

    e) shutdown DPM 2007 but not remove for retention periode - so as a worst case scenario: in case a restore is required from the dpm 2007 storage pool I would uninstall the DPM 2012 agent on the server which needs a restore, install the DPM 2007 agent again make the restore and afterwards de-install the dpm 2007 agent again and install the dpm 2012 agent again

    Questions:

    1) is a restart required after deinstallation of dpm 2007 agents? For DPM 2010 I never had to restart (OS 2008) but I have never touched this DPM 2007 installation

    2) Is there an easy way to transfer the configuration of DPM 2007 to DPM 2012 (protection groups)? I saw several questions like that but so far the answer was always no - has this changed?

    3) about step e) is there a better way to do this?

    Idea Two:

    a) Upgrade OS Windows 2003 to Windows 2008

    b) Patch SCDPM 2007 to newest patch level

    c) Upgrade SCDPM 2007 to DPM 2010 (including SQL upgrade)

    d) Upgarde OS Windows 2008 to Windows 2008 R2

    e) Patch SCDPM 2010 to newest patch level

    f) Upgarde SCDPM 2010 to SCDPM 2012

    Questions:

    1) has anyone ever done that? Could someone give a feedback? I have tried an in place upgrade before and it succeeded sometimes but not always - in addition when it succeded the System Center system was (most often) somewhat unstabel so that I ended up re-installing everything. So I am quit sceptical that an upgrade from DPM 2007 to DPM 2012 is really going to work. It would be the ideal solution as I could keep all my updates but as said I am somewhat reserved that it is really going to work.

    2) Does someone know how DPM 2007 and DPM 2010 are going to react when I do an OS upgrade (from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 and again to Windows 2008 R2) ? Do I have to be aware of something?

  • Hi,

The proper steps are as follows:

    a) Patch SCDPM 2007 to newest patch level. (kb2250436)

    b) Save copy of DPM2007 SQL database (dpmbackup -db) - copy to network share.

    c) Un-install DPM 2007 - then Upgrade OS Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 - then to Windows 2008 R2.

    d) Install DPM2007 and install latest patch level. (kb2250436)

    e) Copy saved DPM 2007 DPMDB to local drive, then restore DPM 2007 DPMDB.
         (dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc c:\msdpm.bak)
         (dpmsync -sync)

    f) Upgrade SCDPM 2007 to DPM 2010 (Which automatcally included SQL upgrade)

    g) Patch SCDPM 2010 to newest patch level (kb2615782)

    h) Upgrade SCDPM 2010 to SCDPM 2012.
