XP VM Licensing in Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Forgive me if this has been asked and hopefull this questions has a simple answer.

I have an old Dell with Windows XP installed which came with OEM licensing. I want to virtualize this computer using VMWare Player (need parallel port for dongle) in a new Windows 7 Professional DT. What licensing requirements do I need to comply with? How do I go about activating the VM after the migration? Is there a path to licensing this instance of Windows in a VM? If it requires a Retail or VL media with a new key I should be able to do a repair install with the new media, enter the key and retain the systems configuration.

If I can't migrate, then how do I get a licensed instance of XP running in VMWare Player on Windows 7? At that point I can reinstall the software, copy data over then reconfigure the system. I would much rather migrate the existing Dell DT insance of course.

    Thanks for your help!
