Unable to contact Project Server - with Project Client 2010 on EPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

I've got a problem with an EPM2010 environment.

We have migrated Sharepoint + Project Server 2007 solution, with PWA site and project client 2007 which worked great, to Sharepoint + Project Server 2010.

We have tried to connect to PWA with Project client 2007 and it works.

We have tried to connect to PWA with Project client 2010 and it doesn't work... "unable to contact Project server"

    PWA site's logs :

    Connection with Project Client 2007

  • Hello All

    I found the solution

In the PWA Log after a Project Client 2010 connexion, I've got this :

    2012-11-07 13:13:11 192.168.1.87 OPTIONS /PWA/ - 443 - 192.168.0.20 Microsoft+Office+Protocol+Discovery 404 6 0 0
    2012-11-07 13:13:11 192.168.1.87 GET /PWA/ - 443 - 192.168.0.20 Microsoft+Project 401 2 5 0

The important thing is the 404 reply for OPTIONS request. In IIS Request Filtering feature, the OPTIONS verb was set to False... I try to set it to true, then Project Client 2010 connexion works !!

    I'm happy. Thanks to all

  • Hello Kroswell,

Are you using Project 2007 Compatibility Mode for PWA?

  • Hello Expiscornovus,

Yes I do. In PWA, server settings, I let the BCM mode after the 2007 to 2010 upgrade.

I tried to disabled this mode after a VM snapshot, no change.

  • Hi there,

What is the setup of your PS 2010 farm? Do you connect via a load balancer by any chance? If so, can you test connecting directly to one of the web front ends and by passing the load balancer?

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi Kroswell,

Did you take VM snaphot of both application and database server?

Please note once BCM mode is turned off, you won’t be able to  turn it back on, If you are planning to use 2007 client for a while , I think before proceeding further you may need to re-do the migration to have BCM functionality.

    Yes, I did.

My PWA web frontend access url is https://completeUrl/PWA. In both Project 2007 and 2010 I use this url. It works in 2007 but not in 2010...

I don't know what is the problem... Maybe an authentication problem ? In IIS I set only Window Authentication mode for PWA site...

  • Do you use any proxy servers, if so can you make an exception for the PWA URL then retest? Have you tried from more that one client machine?

    Thanks

    Hi Paul,

I've installed Project client 2010 on 2 client machine and the result is the same... And Project 2007 is install on 2 anothers client machine and it works. PWA site Works from all client machine with IE.

    I tried this stuff : http://epmsource.com/2010/03/04/entering-different-user-credentials-with-project-2010/

"Once configured, open Project 2010 and select the Project Server profile and click OK. After a couple of seconds a credential prompt will be displayed."

I have no credentials prompt displayed as above, only error prompt "unable to contact Project server"

    Kroswell.

  • I am sure you may have used correct PWA url , thought of re-validating. Sometimes users make end up adding PWA site URL along with default.aspx.

  • Hi,

I had a similar problem when migrating from 2007 to 2010. If you can access the PWA 2010 in Internet Explorer fine, please check if you have any custom fields which have formulas. These are likely to have not migrated through properly and will prevent Ms Project from connecting to the server.

    Hello,

Effectively, I've got a ten custom fields with formulas.

I've tested to remove the content of this custom fields with simple values (like '"test"' or '0' ) with no more success.

But I d'ont understand why this custom field could prevent MsProject Client connecting to the serv ?

  • I would try,

    a. Open PWA, Project center, high light a project and click on Open button, it will take you to the profile and will open the application.

    b. Stop / Start the Project application service in central administration. Later check the status

    c. Can you check the behavior using Projtool? (try to connect using admin account)

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/gg446880(v=office.14).aspx

    d. I hope the version you mentioned in the BCM page is not above than the Project 2010 client version

    e. Collect the fiddler and IIS log and paste here

    f. create another PWA directly in 2010, check the status

    g. Create another web application and new PWA , check the status

    Hello,

    a. I've got the same error issue if i try this way

    b. OK, I've restart Project Application Service without any problem

    c. Connexion with ProjTools is successful !! I can see all projects and all custom fields

    d. With BCM activated, There are versions 12.0.6423.1000,14.0.2215.1000

    e. PWA Log ? There are in the begin of this thread

f&g. Iv' created another site with another PWA and I've got the same error message

So, ProjTools 2010 work great. What's the difference between Project Client 2010 & Projtools 2010 ?
