BSOD During Shutdown, Restart, or Logoff RRS feed

  • Recently my computer started showing a BSOD when I shutdown, restart, or logoff. Whenever I execute one of the mentioned actions my computer will start the process, show a BSOD and then restart returning to the login screen. After my computer has returned to the login screen I am able to shutdown without receiving a BSOD so it seems to only happen after I have logged into my computer.

    I checked my Reliability Monitor in the control panel and this issues seems to coincide with the installation of a VPN software that I purchased, so I removed the software, and restored my computer to a previous version before i installed the software but the problem continues to exist.

    I am currently running Windows 7 64bit

  • I am running win 7 64 ultimate. and I have a similar issue. I have found the solution was rolling back the driver for my NVidia graphics card. I know it sounds unrelated but my issue was every time the computer went to sleep it would bsod as I tried to resume waking the computer. the culprit was the graphics driver. I had to roll back past 251.1 I believe were the numbers of the update. give it a try worse comes to worse just reinstall the newer driver and you are no farther from your answer. but it did allow my comp to wake from sleep and not bsod!

  • Thanks for your input, I also started to suspect this when I was trying to update my Nvidia graphics driver today and I received a quick BSOD followed by my computer restarting and returning to the login screen. Either way I will try rolling back my driver to see if this fixes it. Again thank you for the input, and any more advise anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

  • A bugcheck (BSOD) is a mechanism to protect your PC from damage.

     

    To see the cause I have to take a look at the dumps with the Debugging Tools for Windows.

    Please start the Windows Explorer and go to the folder C:\Windows\Minidump. Next, copy the dmp files to your desktop, zip all dmp into 1 zip file and upload the zip file to your public Skydrive [1] folder and post a link here.

    If you can't see dmp files, make sure your Windows is configured correctly [2][3] to generate dumps.

    If you want to analyze them your own, check those videos [4][5] and read this KB article [6].

  • We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.  

    WE NEED AT LEAST TWO DMP FILES TO SPOT TRENDS AND CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS.
    You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.
    If you are overclocking stop.  (chances are if you dont know if you are, you are not)
    To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.  
    The procedure:
    * Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
    * Zip up the copy (compress them)
    *Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or"Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

    To ensure minidumps are enabled:
    * Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
    * Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
    * Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
    * Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
    * Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    * OK your way out.
    * Reboot if changes have been made.
    Please also run MSinfo32 and upload the output as well.
    To run MSinfo32 please go to start>run>MSinfo32
    Go to "file" "save" and upload the saved file with the DMPS
    System specs are extremely useful so please include whatever you know.

    Blue Screen View & Who Crashed are often wrong and should only be used in an emergency...

    I also suggest you try steps below to check this issue:

    1. Run chkdsk /r /f and sfc /scannow.

    Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

    2. I also kindly suggest you update BIOS and drivers. (Check the computer’s manual for information on how to do this or call the computer manufacturer)
