Update windows GPO templates

    Question

  • Hi,

We are currently using windows 2008 R2 and need to update windows 10 GPO template to configure few windows 10 setting.

our concern is that updating windows 10 GPO will cause any impact on existing group policy objects/settings?

Also confirm if below is the step to update GPO template.

    1. download windows 10 GPO template

    2. overwrite the ADML and ADMX files in C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain\Policies\PolicyDefinitions

  • Hi,
Based on my experience, there will be no impact of updating the ADMX templates. This is because ADMX templates are only used for creating new GPO settings or modifying existing GPO settings, not impact GPOs.
If you are using central store, please add the downloaded template files into central store %systemroot%\sysvol\domain\policies\PolicyDefinitions.
You could refer to more details regarding to manage Group Policy ADMX files step-by-step guide from: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb530196.aspx
