Are these folders necessary? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    I just seqenced "Attachmate EXTRA! 9". The installer creates temporary folders for the installation sources.

    AppV Sequencer shows me under "Virtual Filesystem (hope correctly translated form German)" folders like

    - System Volume Information

    - CSIDL_WINDOWS
      - Installer
      - Prefetch
      - winsxs

    Are these folders necessary? As far as I now are the folders not really important, or?

    Thanks in forward for answers.

  • System Volume Information can be removed, like znack mentions. It contains things like restore points etc., and should be excluded by default in Sequencer.

    CSIDL_WINDOWS\Installer contains cached Windows Installer files so if you ever fancy to upgrade your package then you shouldn't remove it.

    CSIDL_WINDOWS\Prefetch can be safely removed, it contains copies of application binaries that were run and loaded during monitoring as Windows uses this folder to speed up program startup after initial execution.

    CSIDL_WINDOWS\winsxs should not be removed as it contains side-by-side (SxS) assemblies for installed components. Removing the folder can (probably does) break the application install.

  • Hello,

    System Volume Information could probably be excluded, however;

    Depending on your needs of the package (for example upgrade would be a suitable scenario to keep installer) - the others can be required depending of course exactly what they contain
