  • Receiving this alert in DPM 2010 trying to resolve it "Unable to configure protection"

    Description: DPM could not start a recovery, consistency check, or initial replica creation job for Volume E:\ on for following reason:
     (ID 3170)
    The protected volume \\?\Volume{fdb06677-3157-49fa-908a-ea255b826e3a}\ on could not be accessed. The volume may have been removed or dismounted, or another process may be exclusively using it. (ID 55 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))

  • Hi VFSniper,

    Have you tried simply rebooting the server that the volume is sitting on? If that's not a possibility, then it may be an issue with a VSS writer on the server in question. Open a command prompt and type the following on the server with the Volume E:\

    vssadmin /listwriters

    This will display all of the VSS writers on the server and you need to check the status of each one to see if any of them are in a failed or error state. If they are, then a reboot is probably the quickest way of resetting the error state, otherwise, you're into a heap of command line to get it sorted.

    Also, check the actual permissions on the volume along with verifying that there isn't any encryption or compression enabled on it as these could cause problems too.

    Finally, confirm that Anti-Virus software isn't blocking access to the volume.
