Copy security group from one site collection to another? RRS feed

  • Question

  • What's the best way to copy a security group from one site collection to another? Or maybe copy all users in one security group on a site collection to another security group in another site collection?

    Thanks.

  • Out of the Box using SharePoint, there is no such tool which would copy all the groups from one site collection to another site collection. You could use a tool that is available in codeplex http://spgroupsynch.codeplex.com/ . This is a one time push only.

The other way is using coding aginst object model which is more tedious. Hope this helps.

  • On a slightly less technical approach, you can select the users you want to copy from the group, got to Actions and Email Users. Then copy the list of emails in the email message that is created and copy them into the people picker for your new group before clicking the Check Names icon and then adding them. This is limited to a certain number of users (I've not figured out the actual limit but it's less than 300, so you would have to break it down if required, but it's a non techhy/coded way of doing it.
