File and Folder Exclusion from image backup (.VHDX)? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

What I can understand is that you can "exclude File and Folder" from the DPM backup with reg settings our with a global value. My question is if you can exclude pagefile.sys from the image backup (vhdx file) so the actual get smaller? The vdh(x) is an file based image file so it would be possible i Think?

  • Hi,

You can use the Set-DPMGlobalProperty cmdlet to set global properties for DPM 2016, and with this cmdlet you can exclude page file VHDs.

    Example:

    Set-DPMGlobalProperty -DPMServerName "Contoso-DPMServer" -HyperVPagefileExclusions "*_pagefile.vhd"

    Reference:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/dataprotectionmanager/set-dpmglobalproperty?view=systemcenter-ps-2016

Note: During the initial backup the page file will be backed up, the next times it will be excluded.

It is also possible to do with a registry entry, refer to this post.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Thanks Leon,

-What I can understand is that you have to put the pagefile.sys in a separate vhd file "*_pagefile.vhd". I looking for if it is possible when the DPM clone the Server1_Disk0.vhdx it exclude only the pagefile.sys from the vhdx file or you have to have an separate vhd(x) file for this?

Ok, maybe not so much job to create an extra disk .vhd(x)  and put the files you would like to exclude there.

  • I believe the only way is to create a separate .vhd(x) file.
