Constantly blinking icons on the desktop TRM WS16

    Question

  • Constantly blinking icons on the desktop, kinda looks like refreshing the desktop with F5 or Ctrl+R.
Good day, ladies and gentlemen of modern world society!
    The synopsis:
This problem appears on three different virtual terminal servers running Windows Server 2016. It’s in a test mode, so total amount of users right now is only 5 people. Three of them encountered this issue.
To be clear all users are in domain with a roaming profile.
    - Each terminal server responds differently with the same user: blinking persists on one of them, on another one there is no issues. No patterns were discovered.
    - It also seems to persist with admin rights on.
    - The amount of desktop icons to recreate the issue is from 5 to 7 and more.
Unfortunately, google had no answer for this. So I’m looking forward for some help or at least an advice here.

  • Hi TEDSv,

Had the same issue with Windows 2016 with Citrix Xenapp 7.15. The desktop flashing icons was flashing very often.

Does the issue disappear if you open File Explorer > View > Options?

    I wrote a blog-post about it: https://tech.xenit.se/flickering-desktop-icons-re-directed-folder/

Step 1: Create a USER GPP that will be applied to affected targets

Step 2: Create a Registry Item

    Step 3: Add registry key

    • Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    • Key Path: SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}
    • Tab Common: [v] Run in logged-on user’s security context (user policy option)

  • Hi,

Please make sure that your Windows Server 2016 is fully patched with Windows Update/Hotfix, it would be helpful for resolving some known issues and improving the performance.

You can open Run, type “winver” to check current OS build, compare the OS build with below update history to determine if your system is fully patched.

Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 update history:
    https://support.microsoft.com/fil-ph/help/4000825

If problem persists, try to change/add NoRemoteChangeNotify registry entry(REG_DWORD) to/with value 1 in below location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Please remember to back up regrstry entry before any change, it would be helpful for undo the change by restoring from backup.
