Word Crashes and then hangs on the splash screen afterwards RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good Morning All,

My users are having occasional issues with word.

Occasionally it will crash, these things happen but from then on they struggle to open other word documents.  I have found that a WinWord process from the original document is still running in the background.  Only the administrator has the ability to end the process (when they try it just doesn't do anything).

While it would be nice to make it so that word never crashes a way for my users to start up office again without having to call me to enter my password would work just as well.

    Any thoughts?

    THanks,
    Sam

  • Hi Sam,

We can try to narrow down the root cause with the following methods.

    1.

Try disable all the add-ins to see if this behavior could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins, if this behavior won't occur with all the add-ins disabled, we can enable them one by one to find out which one might caused the problem.

    2.

Try repair Office as a quick fix

    3.

Try start Word in safe mode to see if this behavior will still occur, if this behaivor won't occur in safe mode, the behavior might be caused by certain items that are loaded with Word, try follow the instructions in the following support article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

    4.

Try configure Windows in clean boot mode to check if this behavior could be caused by the 3rd-party services, if this behavior won't occur in clean boot mode, try follow the instructions in the How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot section in the following support article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Additionally, we can also use the Process Monitor to capture more details:
