Exporting a custom image from WDS to WSIM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm having a problem exporting a custom image from WDS to WSIM to create an answer file. I have created the deployment share with the $OEM$ Folders, Out of Box Drivers and Packages folders. When I export the image from WDS to WSIM I get the following error message when I create the catalog file:

I have used the install.wim from the the Windows 7 install media and that imports correctly.

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

  • Hi,

You should not use the install image exported from WDS to create an unattend file. Please use the install image from the disk.

  • Hi Tim,

I ended up adding the values to the customsettings.ini file which has resolved the issue. Could you tell me where I would use an unattend.xml file

    Thanks

    Shaun

  • I have the same problem. What values did you add?

  • Hi,

This video has some excellent information regarding the customsettings.ini file. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/edge/Gg257963 It's what I used to make my changes.

If you are specifically interested in that, skip to about 52-53 mins in.

    Cheers

    Hi Tim,

I am having the exact same problem with the same log error messages: "Parameter name: source" and the stack dump, etc. It is occuring even for the install.wim directly from my Windows 7 disk. I can open the associated Windows 7 Professional catalog file itself (is that enough to create the unattend file - even for a custom image?), but it cannot finish (re)creating the catalog for the install.wim. If I open the install.wim in WSIM and select Windows 7 Professional it tells me that the associated catalog file is out of date and asks to create a new one, but it still fails about 3/4ths the way through with the exact same error as shown in the log dump above.

    I have Windows 2008 R2 64-bit, with the Windows 7 WAIK kit installed (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=f1bae135-4190-4d7c-b193-19123141edaa).

Also, according to the following article you *can* open custom images in WSIM where it says, "if you intend to create a catalog for a custom Windows image, you should use Image Manager to recreate the catalog for that custom Windows image" (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748951(WS.10).aspx). I do grant, however, that it says "recreate" and not "create from scratch" but I don't understand why it it can't even create the catalog for the install.wim directly from my Win7 disk.

Do you have any further suggestions or insights into this problem?

    Thanks,

    Josh Nielsen

  • Odd... I just installed the Windows 7 WAIK kit on one of my Windows 7 clients and tried to open both the install wim and my custom one exported from WDS in WSIM and they BOTH opened and generated new catlogs with no problem. Why does this not work on Windows 2008 R2? Is it something to do with the version of the WAIK Kit?

  • I'm just about to test this now

    But...

When creating a catalog file, I believe you must create it on the same architecture machine, for instance if you're trying to create a Windows 7 x64 catalog, you have to be running Windows SIM on a x64 machine, same for x86.

So I figure i write this not before testing it, then come back and tell you i lied or not

    Cheers
