  • Question

  • Hi Folks,

I'm planning an automated roll-out of IE11. Maybe I'm missing something but it appears to me that MS haven't been very helpful with providing us with a package that will minimize the disruption to end users.

Here are my observations thus far.

    1. After installing IE11 Enterprise mode wasn't available. After a lot of digging I found out it only comes with certain versions. If you download the IE11 installer direct from MS (as of August 31 2015) and deploy it you won't get Enterprise Mode until you install an upgrade patch.

    2. Upgrade KB2929437 will enable Enterprise Mode. However, it comes as an MSU file which, unlike a conventional updates doesn't extract to a CAB file. So this is not IEAK friendly.

    3. From my own experience and that of others who used IEAK 11 to create an MSI installer, it appears the per-requisate updates I've set to install before the IE11 install are ignored. The installer still tries to update via the Internet

    4. When the IE11 pre-req patches are installed a restart is needed before the IE11 installer can kick off (same post as above).  This makes an automated deployment very difficult. There is a suggestion of using DISM in the post above but there isn't consensus that you can get away without restarting.

  • Hi MeipoXu,

The IEAK was my first port of call. The problem with this is it won't install the update to turn on Enterprise Mode. There is a section in the IEAK for post installation updates but it doesn't work.

I used a script from this post which did the trick. I added the update at the end myself to ensure Enterprise Mode is also set-up in the installation. So just one restart does the trick.

  • Hi Micmaher,

The most concern is about the restarting, right? What is the deployment environment?

If you are using SCCM and IEAK, here is a link for reference:
How to deploy Internet Explorer 11 using SCCM 2012 R2

Please ensure you have chosen "Completely Silent Installation" and "No restart".

If I have missed anything, please feel free to let me know that.

  • Hi Micmaher,

After deploying the Internet Explorer, please try to update it to the latest version(11.0.9600.17937).

Have you configured the group policy to use Enterprise Mode?

    Here are links for reference:

  • Hi,

Yes it's done in the GPO template. It shows up on my browser once its patched.

My issue is with doing the installation and update all in one go.

The post above with the script resolves that.

    Thanks,

    Michael
