F8 not working...

  • Hi, i have an issue during the OSD build where the F8 function does not work. I thought i had the wrong boot image or something but i'm not mistaken here. DPs are updated, option selected for command support enabled.

Oddly enough when i boot initially to select the TS from Winpe the F8 works when in Winpe, but later in the build when in XP, F8 does not work.

    Anyone else expereince this?

  • F8 is a Windows PE feature... It does not work when you are in Windows XP.

  • Hmmm, I don't know about that. Don't confuse me with suggesting i am on the Windows XP desktop pressing F8. I'm talking about during the OSD deployment, when the gina is OSD, and applications and such are installing.

Unless i am missing something, but i always have access to F8 when doing our image deploys, and in Windows XP. That's not in question, i can always fire up the a cmd shell by pressing F8.

  • I was a little too fast... When you are in the SETUP part of the Windows XP deployment, you can't use F8.

  • Agreed.

I am talking about after that. When XP fires up after the OS is layed down, and the TS starts installs applications ans such, that's when i always have access to F8. It is just odd that only during a build and capture that it does not work.

It is the same in 2 other environments i test in, just thought it odd and cannot find an explaination.

  • Try SHIFT+F10, and let me know if that works...

  • nope, SHIFT+F10 works fine during mini-setup only

I'm doing a build right now, i was able to access F8 during the winpe portion, and SHIFT+F10 during mini-setup, but it has since rebooted and in XP now, and F8 does not work, or SHIFT+F10 for that matter...

  • can you please verify that the same boot image that you enabled F8 command support on   is the one in use during that time, perhaps you are using more than one boot.wim

  • It is.

Again, when the TS is in Winpe, it works. When the TS is in XP, it will not....

  • I've got the same issue as well.

During certain periods, when in the full operating system [Windows XP SP3], the F8 function does not work as expected. For example, I just experienced this odd behavior while an "Install Software" step was running in the full OS. The software being installed is Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP 32-bit, so nothing super special.

However what is odd, is that on the very next step, which is also "Install Software," the F8 command worked properly! The software being installed at that point is the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

  • Are you sure your WinPE is booting from the correct architecture?

I've noticed the same problem and i had F8 enabled on the x64 boot but since he was booting on the x86 architecture the F8 wasn't working at all :) Just to be sure, make sure both images have F8 enabled :)
