Custom Name (CNAME / Alias) for Azure SQL (Elastic Pool) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi There

We’ve deployed SQL Elastic Pool and planning to migrate SQL databases (from on-prem cluster) to it. Post migration, we wish to be able to continue to use the same name (something.ourdomain.com) to access these databases instead of Azure SQL server name (AZSQL.database.windows.net). We use Infoblox DNS service (not AD-integrated) and there’s no instance of the DNS service deployed in Azure. I want to know the options in-hand (CNAME or Private Endpoint) and which one is best approach to achieve the requirement:

    1. Access to Azure SQL for applications running in Azure VNet.
    2. Access to Azure SQL for applications running on-prem.

The other question that I have after reading this article DNS alias for Azure SQL Database--> https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-sql/database/dns-alias-overview. It suggests various methods of creating an Alias. Where exactly this alias is going to be created? within the Azure DNS zone where AZSQL.database.windows.net exists?

    Thanks
