SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • On a Windows 2008 R2 server, I have installed SharePoint 2013 Trial and Project Server 2013 Trial.

At the end of the Project Server installation, the SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard kicks in.

This wizard runs thru until at Step 8, it fails with the message 'Failed to create sample data'. An exception of type System.NullReferenceException was thrown. Additional exception information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object'.

Can anyone suggest what is causing this and how to resolve it please?

    Thank you.

  • Wow!  Finally found the issue when rerunning the products configuration wizard.  The distributed Cache server requires many of the same SharePoint add-ins as the other servers.

In my case the PowerPivot addin was required and when I added to the Distributed Cache I could rerun the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard, it works.

  • Look into the ULS logs and see if it give you any clues on what caused it to fail

    Also try repairing the installations

Also make sure that the SharePoint and Project server are at the same version.

Make user all windows server patches have been applied and reboot system.
