Chkdsk and Disk Defragmenter Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently attempted to clean up my harddrive, and I noticed that my Disk Defragmenter utility did not show my C: drive in the list of drives available to defragment.  I had decided to run the Chkdsk utility (both the Windows GUI one and in the command prompt as well) and it kept saying that my drive was unable to do checkdisk because my drive was busy, but I could schedule one on a restart.  This didn't happen obviously.  I also have that "dirty bit" issue (I can't remember the exact byte code/location or whatever).

I am using Windows 7 Professional, although I do not have a Windows 7 DVD or CD.  I downloaded the install program through a co-op site from my college, and I'm not sure whether or not I have the program still.  I'm open to any suggestions.

I have tried to run Chkdsk and defrag while in Safe Mode, no luck.  I tried to install the "hotfix" for the chkdsk on restart issue, as far as I can tell that had no luck either.
