Barracuda Spam Firewall and Exchange 2013 Coexistance

    Question

  • Hi,

My MX records are pointing to my Barracuda 1 and Barracuda 2

    and

Barracuda 1 points to EDGE 1
Barracuda 2 points to EDGE 2

I am using Hardware Load Balancer for Exchange 2013 CAS Servers and there is Virtual IP where all other traffic will be routed.  In cut Over exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013, I am planning not to use EDGE servers anymore, So Both Barracuda will be pointed to that Virtual IP of LB on port 2.

    Regards

    Usman

  • Hi Usman,

Yes.  If you want to load balance inbound SMTP across your Exchange 2013 CAS servers, then configure inbound port 25 on your Barracuda firewall to point at the VIP on your hardware load balancer (assuming SMTP is configured on your load balancer too)

  • I feel like routing the mail through your load balancer adds some additional complexity that you probably don't need.  I'm not familiar enough with the Barracuda appliance to be sure this is an option, but if you can have the Barracuda send the mail directly to both Exchange Servers (most smarthosts do this and I know Axway does the same thing with their MailGate appliances) that removes a dependency on the load balancer for your incoming mail.
