cbengine behind the curtains. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am posting because i am curious how cbengine works. It takes a ton of CPU, why? What exactly is it doing to my data. How do i have 20TB of data but my azure usage is only 10TB is this compression or is this deduplication? Are there any details on on this?

    Thanks

    *EDIT*

Bonus points for the differences between the cbengine on 2012 vs 2016. I noticed i have a bunch of disks mounted with the volume name CB-

  • Hi!

I believe the cbengine.exe effectively reads every single file in the VM, and sends incremental backups to Azure.

Why you have less storage usage in Azure is because all the data that is backed up is compressed and encrypted before being transferred. Once the compression and encryption is applied the data in the Recovery Services Vault is about 30-40% smaller.

    Hope you find this useful!

    Best regards,
