in devices, choose a device, Right click, Install application - no applications appear, why? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Can anyone point me to documentation on how this works,  I see no applications when I look in there. As far as I know, this has never worked.  We are on MECM 1910, we have several hundred applications with about 95% being user targeted, 5% device targeted.  most are standard deployments with 2 or 3 requiring approval.

I have tested this via right clicking a device in a device collection that I know has a current application deployment targeting it.

I saw somewhere somebody talking about configuring an application with an approval to set this up.  Is that right, the only applications this works on are applications that have approvals enabled for them?

  • See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/apps/deploy-use/install-app-for-device for complete details including the necessary configuration.

  • exactly what I was after, thanks.  my googlefoo failed me

Seems like a strange setup, the way I understand this, as our policy is to deploy based on users except where software is limited to particular devices, for me to use this functionality, I have to create a second deployment for every one of our applications, that targets an empty device collection and I have to have admin approval required set on all of these duplicate deployments.   I will give it a try, thanks again.

  • Almost. You wouldn't want to target an empty collection, you'd want to target a collection that had all potential devices where the deployment could be enforced as members otherwise they would never be able to retrieve the policy. Because approval is needed, the deployment won't show in Software Center until as admin initiates the deployment from the console.

  • thanks, my interpretation of the doco where it said the following, but no mention of what to put in the collection.

"Deploy the application as Available to a device collection."

I just assumed it was another quirk similiar to the deploying an app as available to a device collection, but if you tick the requires approval option it doesn't appear in software center while if you do the same to a user collection, it does the opposite and you don't have the option of hiding in software center(which is logical)

Once you know how it all works, it kind of makes sense.

    thankyou

  • Hi,

For Available deployments, application content is downloaded when the user initiates the application installation from Software Center.
For Required deployments, application content is downloaded when the assignment is activated and the application is found Applicable after evaluation. To understand when the assignment is activated, see:
Application Deployment to Device Collections or Application Deployment to User Collections.

    Best regards,
