As a quick side-note: you should never run any extraneous background services in your sequencer machine, not just because they seem to cause this sort of problems but because they also might introduce unneeded *** to sequence by doing things in the background.

Sequencer should be the most clean image you can make from the Windows (i.e. the base installation) sans those situations where you need some pre-requisities components on it that you rely having on the client as well.

  • What does the MSI log file say? If you haven't explicitly specified one, there should be a default installation log in the %tmp% folder.

  • Ok, Windows Installer isn't happy about something. In order to remedy why a rollback is happening a verbose Windows Installer log of the installation is needed. If someone will post their log or email it to me I'll gladly look at it because Windows Installer usually does a good job of explaining the issue unless it is a custom action with poor error reporting.

  • Hmm it's like some logging is missing because there is no hint as to what led to the 1603 error. Usually you will see an event a few lines before that explains it but all you see in this log is the Word Viewer msi being launched.

Is the above trace from the following log?

    C:\DOCUME~1\jwang63\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 Setup(0001).txt

You might want to set windows installer logging in the registry:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314852/

Then at least all MSIs will log to %TEMP%. What I suspect is that I am missing logging data because this is a chained install.

What platform are you using for your sequencer? MS VPC or VMWare?  I had issue like this when using VMWare rather than using MS VPC.

  • Using the same image? Were you able to isolate that issue further because it doesn't quite make sense?

  • Kiran,

Would it be possible to test sequencing without any MSTs?
