SCCM 2012 SP1 with existing WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an existing WSUS (on server 2012) and a newly installed SCCM 2012 server (on server 2012).  Before adding the SUP role on the SCCM server WSUS was synchronizing updates and deploying them to clients without any issues.  After configuring SUP on SCCM and setting up WSUS to be the upstream server for SCCM the WSUS server does not receive updates from the MS update site.  There are no errors within the console on WSUS but in the logs I receive the follow

WSUS configuration has been changed by NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
    Downloading retried

There are no errors on SCCM regarding updates.  All the current updates are showing up in Software Updates on SCCM.  Not sure where to go from here.  Thanks

  • Using an existing WSUS instance is bad joo-joos and unsupported unless you've reset the update metadata on that WSUS instance -- it's always just easier to reload WSUS.

Also, when using a remote WSUS instance, you do not configure it as an upstream of anything. The admin console on the site server is merely loaded to provide the SDK for the site server and is not part of the WSUS replication process. Thus, you do *not* install a SUP on the site server, just the remote system hosting the WSUS instance.

  • Did you install a new WSUS instance for the SUP? If not, that's a problem. A SUP is just a thin layer of management for an instance of WSUS and thus requires a local WSUS instance.

What log are you pulling those lines from? Out of context lines from any log are completely useless and meaningless. Thus, please include a much larger snippet and the name of the actual log you pulled it from.

Also note that the SUP is *not* responsible for download or distributing updates in ConfigMgr 2012 -- updates are downloaded by the console (or the site server if using an ADR) and distributed using DPs.

Finally, what problems are you actually experiencing?

  • I installed the console on the SCCM server.  Used existing WSUS server.  Here is before and what I want to do.

    *Error received (SCCM01)

SCCM01.domain.com     SMS_WSUS_CONFIGURATION_MANAGER         6600       WSUS Configuration Manager failed to configure upstream server settings on WSUS Server "WSUS01.domain.com".    Possible cause: WSUS Server version 3.0 SP2 or above is not installed or cannot be contacted.  Solution: Verify that the WSUS Server version 3.0 SP2 or greater is installed. Verify that the IIS ports configured in the site are same as those configured on the WSUS IIS website.

WSUS01 is server 2012 standard so the WSUS version is good.  IIS ports are all correct.  Not sure where to go from here.

  • What does wcm.log tell? Does it list an error code?
