ATI Digital Cable Tuner - Cable Card Activation RRS feed

  • Question

I have a custom built machine with more than enough resources to run live TV.  I picked up one of the ATI Digital Cable Tuners (External).  I cannot activate the cable card.  The FAQ's indicate that the machine needs to be "Cable Card Ready".  Can I get my machine to be cable card ready?  If so How?

    Unfortunately, no.
As per CableLabs' rules for DCTs in PCs, they'll only work on a 'certified' system.
Translation:  OEM-only (and, those OEMs spend a great deal of money to certify their builds), special BIOS (has a DCT-enable flag in it), and a second, special Windows product key (to enable the tuner(s.))

I hate to say it, but, you spent a good deal of cash to build something that you can't use the way you want to.

HP, Dell, Velocity Micro, and Niveus (to name a few; there should be a couple more) can sell you a 'proper' CableCard-ready PC.
