  • If you delete a content type, does that remove the documents that are based on it?

  • You will not be able to delete a content type that is in use. In order to delete it, you would need to delete all lists or libraries that are using the content type, and also clear them from the site and site collection recycle bins prior to being able to delete the content type from the site. You can move your documents to a different folder first, or download them first and then upload them again after deleting the content type, although that will change the metadata associated with them (time created/created by, etc.).  Hope that helps!
