Can we install MIM 2016 sp1 and use the FIM 2010 databases? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We would like to upgrade our FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 to MIM 2016 Sp1. We prefer a parallel upgrade to an in place upgrade.

To be safe we hope to build 3 new Windows Server 2016 servers. Sync, Portal and MSSQL 2016. First we plan to dump/restore the FIMService and FIMSynchronization databases on the new SQL Server.

Can we then INSTALL MIM Sync and Service/Portal and expect the installation process to recognize the existing Databases are FIM 2010 R2 versions?

  • That is exactly right.
During installation, you say "use existing database" and point to the databases in question.

Ensure the accounts used for this new environment have the permissions to the databases,

    - Install User SA

    - MIM Sync and MIM Service users, DBO to their respective DBs.

To be sure, match the permissions from FIM R2.

  • Yes, that is the correct approach.

There is a MS document on moving the Sync DB:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3876.fim-2010-how-to-migrate-fim-backend-database-to-new-sql-server.aspx

When you move the FIMService DB, there are 2 things you need to remember:
