Dell Autoloader PowerVault 122T with DPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everybody,

i try to get a Dell PowerVault 122T LTO-Autoloader working with DPM 2010.

I installed WS2008R2 and both, the Autoloader and the Drive are detected and are shown in their respective sections in device manager.

I have installed DPM2010, and added a library. No problem.

DPM shows an Autoloader, with 8 empty slots and one drive. Fine

    Now the problem:

I cannot add a tape. The "Add tape" link is greyed out and i've spent hours to make it active - no change.

When i load the library with tapes and as DPM to inventory the library, dpm does not detect, that there are tapes in the slots. It shows EMPTY.

I am wondering, that DPM says: Barcode reader: available, Autoloader: not available

not available does not sound good, but what to do?

Any ideas? I really need help, cannot see the way to the sun anymore

  • Hi Linda,

Yes, you will need to work with Dell to resolve this issue - the hardware is not reporting a transport.  Until the hardware problem is resolved, DPM will not work properly.

      ********** Changer Parameters **********

Number of Transport Elements : 0  <----- NOTE THIS IS ZERO
Number of Storage Elements : 8
Number of Cleaner Slots : 0
Number of of IE Elements : 0
             Number of NumberDataTransferElements : 1
             Number of Doors : 0

ALSO, the library should also report a serial number, no biggy since you can't share the library, but it should have one.  Perhaps a firmware update can resolve this, but DPM should work fine without one.

Product Data for Medium Changer device :
      Vendor Id    : DELL
      Product Id   : PV-122T
      Revision     : D37
SerialNumber :    <------ NOTE MISSING SERIAL NUMBER

Please report back what Dell finds or does to resolve the transport issue.

  • Hi Linda,

We have not had any reports of similar behavior for that library, however, can you supply the device driver details (name and version) for the media changer in device manager ?

Are their any Library console settings that allow you to control the autoloader feature ?

  • Hi Mike,

    thank You for Your reply.

OK, i've been to device manager and in the driver details, i've found this:

    Files: ........\powerfil.sys

    Microsoft Coroporation

    Version 6.1.7600.16385

The name of the device is detected correctly: DELL Powervault 122T-Autoloader. The driver does not report errors.

Hmm, sorry, what do  You men with "Library console settings"?

  • Hi Linda,

Thanks for the driver info, that should work fine.   I'm curious if the library has any way for you to check configuration settings ?

To collect more information from Windows, please follow these steps:

Download the DPMerasetape.zip file from the following link and extract to c:\temp folder:

    http://cid-b03306b628ab886f.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/DPMeraseTape.zip?wa=wsignin1.0&sa=801749705#resId/B03306B628AB886F!822

The utilities are not that user friendly, but here are the commands I need you to run from an administrative command prompt.

Always Stop DPMLA Service prior to running MCT.EXE Commands.

      NET STOP DPMLA

Then run these two commands and send me the output of each.

    C:\Temp> mct-x64.exe -p
    C:\Temp> mct-x64.exe -d

  • Hi Mike,

    i have some additional infos:

DPM sees changer and tape on different SCSI-IDs. Of course, that's correct, i only wanted to say, that the IDs are identified

i have reviewed the eventlog - nothing in there (no errors or warnings)

i have played around with the console of the autoloader (at the machine). no errors to be seen. It' no problem to load and unload cartridges etc.

i have rebootet the DPM-server (cause i had no other ideas)

    nothing changes.......

  • Dear Mike,

I am having IBM TS3100 Tape Library. I am using DPM 2010 in windows 2008R2 Ent. I have following .

    1. DPM is not detecting the Slots in Tape library. Its shown as 0. So for each job i need to manually move the disk to drive.

    2. The barcode reader is shown as unavailable. (while it works for library)

3.Because of 1st pblm.. i am not able to append multiple media to a single job.

    4. While restoring from tape i can see individual items. It shows only the complete drive. So restoration in almot inpractical  for file server data which is around 1 TB.

    For your info:

The driver installed for the tape library is "ltotape.sys"

Can you please help me on this. Else we are planning to move to symantec backupexec.

Help is much appreciated and thanks in advance

  • Hi,

I'm not familiar with the IBM TS3100, but it may need the following registry setting required for TS2900.  Please add that entry and see if that helps.

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent DWORD: RSMCompatMode
    Value: 29 (Decimal)

If the above does not help - Download the DPMerasetape.zip file from the following link and extract to c:\temp folder:
