  • does the vista ultimate built in backup allow for bare metal restore? i have a copy of acronis true image and i am not sure if i should dump it in favor of the built in back up solution.

    also, does it allow bare metal restore to different hardware??

  • The Vista backup program does allow for a bare metal restore as long as you've done a "complete computer backup", eg to an external USB disk.  I've had to do it a number of times so I know it works.

    The downside is it *seems* to require like hardware ... I tried restoring once to a partition smaller than that which had been backed up (and the smaller one was still plenty large to hold the amount which had been backed up) and it wouldn't let me do it.  Even if it did, if you recover to another hardware platform you may have driver issues.

  • thanks Bill. sounds like i can't trust my backups to a crippled bare metal solution such as vista's built in one.
