Backup and restore buttons not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Any button in my backup and restore centre with a shield next to it (for UAC) is not working. Identical to this thread:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/6a138e65-2834-41ac-bd40-c2344e20b824/backup-and-restore-panel-buttons-not-working

A fair way down that page, Lokesh replies but I don't have any of the software that he mentions in his post. Is anyone able to help?

  • Hi,

According to the Lokesh's reply, this problem is probably caused by 3rd plugin in Windows Explorer Shell. UAC dialog couldn't be prompt correctly.

To resolve this problem, you can try to use ShellExViewer instead to make troubleshoot, please follow the content of the link below for more details:

  • Hi,

I have used ShellExViewer and disabled every context menu apart from the 'Windows Shell Common dll' files but still the problem remains.

  • Hi,

What's the type of your current User Account? How about using Administrator account to have a try.

  • well, under this situation, we need to use Process Monitor to capture the process of start Windows backup and restore.

Note: you can save the Process Monitor captured file and upload it to your OneDrive, then post the link here.

You can access to the link below to download Process Monitor:

  • Hi,

According to PM log, Windows backup process even ignored "System Volume Information". In my opinion, this should be the reason of this problem. To resolve this problem, you can use chkdsk command fix the disk for test.

    chkdsk c: /r

To know more about System Volume Information, see:

  • Have you installed any disk management tool in your system? Or made any change to the disk before this problem occurs?

Try to use Disk Error checking and defragment tool to fix it for test:

Please run a system file check to find the state of the OS>   I suspect you will find corruption but hopefully it will be able to be fixed without a repair install

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM if you are on win 8 or higher

All instructions are in our Wiki article below...
